Comedian Hasan Minhaj of “The Daily Show” has been chosen as entertainer for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner later this month, the association’s president announced Tuesday.

But Mr. Minhaj, a stand-up comedian who has blasted President Trump’s proposed immigration order barring travelers from several predominantly Muslim countries, won’t share the dias with the president, who is skipping the event.

“I am thrilled that Hasan will serve as our featured entertainer at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” said Jeff Mason, president of the White House Correspondents Association. “Hasan’s smarts, big heart and passion for press freedom make him the perfect fit for our event, which will be focused on the First Amendment and the importance of a robust and independent media.”

After feuding with the media during his campaign and the early phase of his presidency, Mr. Trump announced he won’t attend the annual dinner. White House staffers, who also usually attend the event, have decided to skip it in solidarity with the president.

Mr. Minhaj also hosted last year’s Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington.

“It is a tremendous honor to be a part of such a historic event even though the president has chosen not to attend this year. SAD! Now more than ever, it is vital that we honor the First Amendment and the freedom of the press,” Mr. Minhaj said in a statement.

“Watergate” journalists Bob Woodwad and Carl Bernstein also will speak at the dinner and present awards.
