White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Tuesday said she thinks tax reform can happen sometime this year but that the process also isn’t going to be rushed.
“Remember, we don’t rush things here based on artificial timelines,” Ms. Conway said on Fox Business Network. “This is a very big piece of [the president’s] domestic legislative agenda [and a] very big piece of his campaign promises.”
Ms. Conway said both Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and top economic adviser Gary Cohn have “made very clear that this will not be rushed, that this is something that is ongoing.”
Mr. Mnuchin told CNBC in February that a goal would be getting tax reform passed by Congress’ August recess, which is a time frame that’s also been kicked around on Capitol Hill.
But Republicans had been eyeing potential savings from repealing Obamacare as they laid the groundwork for broader tax reforms, and they had to pull their health care legislation before a floor vote last month.
The GOP is also facing deep internal divisions over plans for an import tax that would generate about $1 trillion in revenue over the next 10 years and potentially help pay for a reduction in other tax rates.
